Yep I’m available for events - I rarely cover them anymore to be honest but when I do I always have a great time and love meeting so many new people.

Here’s a selection of photos from a Emma Brockes’ book launch for her excellent novel, She Left Me the Gun.

Email me hollycocker@me.com if you’re interested in rates etc.

Some more photos from ALAC.

The little boy pictured above, Sam, had just been given his first ever electric wheelchair which meant for the first time in his life (I think he was 6) he could control where he wanted to go. We took it for a spin up in the hills and he absolutely loved it! He took it off road and was a complete daredevil when it came to speed.

Marina (the lady pictured) sadly lost her leg in a car accident on New Year’s Eve a few years ago and has done an incredible job to get to where she is now.

Arona (in the first photo) lost her leg when she was five years old and working in her father’s farm. She was playing hide and seek with her siblings and didn’t see the corn cutter coming. There was only one doctor in the village where she lived and she was piled in to his car and expected to die on the way to the hospital, but thankfully she lived to tell the tale!

I mentioned a while ago that I was working with Art In Site to create a series of images for ALAC (a treatment centre in Swansea for people with artificial limbs or conditions that affect their limbs.)

All of the people above either have an artificial limb or use a wheelchair to help them get around. They were all a pleasure to work with and I made films about them too, which are being shown in the hospital. I’ll post those another time.

This has been one of my favourite commissions (even though it involved a lot of very early morning travel to Swansea) but I worked with a fantastic team and met some wonderful people and heard some amazing stories - what more can I ask for?!

My Life: Breaking Free

A documentary that I was the shooting assistant producer on was aired a couple of weeks ago. Breaking Free tells the story of three 12 year olds who happen to have Down’s Syndrome and we follow them as they start to break free from their parents. Here’s a link to a clip which didn’t make it in to the final film but is a great intro to our main character Ruben.

BBC1 Tonight

Tonight I have a film going out on BBC1’s Inside Out (Yorks and Lincs) at 7.30pm that I produced and directed.

(If you’re out of the area it’s available on Sky channel 957, Virgin 858 and Freesat 967) which tells the story of Billy Burton….

John

John was once an army officer but currently resides in Swansea where he drives his beast of a motorbike. He got hit by a car in a Tesco carpark and had to have his leg amputated, this doesn’t stop him from living life to the full though. He was a pleasure to photograph, a gentle man who didn’t take himself too seriously.

Inside Out

Click here and here to watch two films I recently made for BBC’s Inside Out about young disabled people looking for somewhere to live in the UK. We used London and Bath as bases and went undercover to various estate agents.

ALAC 1

A picture from a new project I have been working on. A commission from Art In Site - these photos show the patients of ALAC (Artificial Limb and Appliance Centre) in Swansea enjoying themselves. We have also been working on a film too….

better late than never…

Having had neglected this blog for the best part of this year (mainly due to this amazing person being an awesome distraction) I think it’s probably time to catch up and post some of the work that I have been up to recently. Bear with me as I post pieces of work probably in the wrong order and try to explain a little of what’s been going on!

SONATA BEHIND THE SCENES

stellascott:

Still from Sonata - photo by Mustafa Boga
Cast: Anne Zander and Alistair Donegan, DoP: Holly Cocker, Sound: Adam Asnan, Writer: Anne Zander

This month I directed a short film called Sonata which was conceived and developed by Anne Zander and I. We shot the one scene in my living room with our 5Ds and Adam’s incredible sound equipment, it was liberating to shoot an idea with such a simple set up and no budget. Waiting now to find the time to sync and edit it - it seems all you need is time to get an idea to paper and then to screen.

Was lucky enough to photograph Erwin whilst filming an interview with him for a 3D: Darkly Digital and Devine, a new film by Robert Adanto which is going to be fantastic!
